What is E-Commerce?
I am sure you have heard of E-Commerce and maybe you are already a big fan of online shopping. The buying and selling of goods and services via electronic means is called electronic commerce, commonly known as E-commerce.
We can see a rapid development in E-commerce nowadays, which attracts a lot of people to have their own business in E-Commerce market.
The question is why E-commerce is so booming?
First of all, the evolution of internet has brought the concept of E-commerce.
A rapid growth of internet users is one of the clear reasons for the E-commerce booming trend. As we can see from the picture above, within last 5 years, the internet population doubled, and now it reached 2.27 billion people. This also means that 2.27 billion people online are the potential customers on E-commerce which demonstrates the humongous size of E-commerce market.
From the customer’s point of view, the ability to reach thousands of shops 24/7 via online is the best ever feature of E-commerce. Customers visit your website, compare products price, quality and features. If they are satisfied with your product they order, make online payments and get delivery at home. It is so much easier and convenient that you don’t have to worry about wasting time to look for the products in many different stores.
E-commerce has not only benefited customers but also suppliers. It is the blessing of E-commerce that today businesses are done while sitting at home. The rapid expansion of E-commerce activities has allowed traditional retail companies to open their own online stores with updated contents. Now they can expand their business without having to sit on physical spaces, to store inventories, to hire selling staff and to entertain customers. Suppliers simply need to spread their brand names by providing high quality products and services. This also means they can reduce enormous amount of cost compare to having actual stores, in which eventually lead to more profit for the business.
There are few disadvantages of E-Commerce. On customers’ side, not being able to check the quality of the goods by trying it on or see the goods in real, and the risk of being cheated by the suppliers. On suppliers’ side, there are a lot of similar types of online shopping mall that perfect competition is inevitable. However, the numerous advantages of E-Commerce are leading the incredible growth of this market that there are more opportunities to success your business online. Maybe it’s our turn to be a millionaire through E-Commerce market.
With the approaching of high technology information era, computer has made our life more convenient and simple, but requires us to also update ourselves in order to meet the constantly changing modern society in which computer software is by far the most important thing we should know. As such, I would like to have for you a brief introduction of Mobile App, which is the latest development in the software arena.
Mobile Application (genrally referred to in its shortened form as Mobile App) is a software application designed to run on smart phones, tablet computers and other mobile devices. They are usually available through application distribution platforms, which are typically operated by the owner of the mobile operating system. Platforms such as the Apple App Store, Google Play, Windows Phone Store, and BlackBerry App World … just to name a few. Some apps are free, while others must be bought. Usually, they are downloaded from the platform to a target device, such as an iPhone, BlackBerry, Android phone or Windows Phone, but sometimes they can be downloaded to laptops or desktops. For apps with a price, generally a percentage, 20-30%, goes to the distribution provider (such as iTunes), and the rest goes to the producer of the app.
Mobile apps were originally offered for general productivity and information retrieval, including email, calendar, contacts, and stock market and weather information. However, public demand and the availability of developer tools drove rapid expansion into other categories, such as mobile games, factory automation, GPS and location-based services, banking, order-tracking, and ticket purchases. The explosion in number and variety of apps made discovering them a challenge, which in turn led to the creation of a wide range of review, recommendation, including blogs, magazines, and dedicated online app-discovery services.
The popularity of mobile applications has continued to rise, as their usage has become increasingly prevalent across mobile phone users. A May 2012 comScore study reported that during the previous quarter, more mobile subscribers used apps than browsed the web on their devices: 51.1% vs. 49.8% respectively. Researchers found that usage of mobile applications strongly correlates with user context and depends on user’s location and time of the day.
According to ABI Research the mobile app market will value at $27 billion in 2013.
Again this year, MilletTech has participated in the Mobile Asia Expo 2013 event, held in the Shanghai New International Expo Centre from June 26 to 28. More than 200+ companies showcased their latest products and services, ranging from new smart phones, backend solutions and wireless technologies, to games, apps, and accessories.
Partly due to the launching of 4G access service by China Mobile, we have noticed that the Expo this year has comparatively more hardware exhibits than software. Samsung, Song, Huawei and ZTE all have their latest gears on display. Sony even immersed smart phones in water in order to show off its water-proofing capability. Not sure how many of you will need to use the phone even during shower, but the feature will definitely come in handy for those road-warriors having to go places during rain.
One interesting exhibit was the hands free lift-gate technology. Have you ever had the experience holding bags of grocery and merchandise, with no free limbs (… except your legs) to open the back trunk? Have you ever dreamed of just telling your car to “open the trunk” and it would respond accordingly. Or have you ever thought of just kicking its tailgate and the car would open the trunk for you. Well, wait no further … brought to you by the Ford Motor Company. Not the voice activation though, but the kicking part. Interesting huh?
Another sensing and control technology from Ford was stress-free parallel parking. The system detects where there is an available parking space, and helps drivers to steer into it –– all with a flip of a button. What the driver needs to do would simply be braking and accelerating as needed. Cool application of technology!
Also featured, was NFC (Near Field Communication) technology. Selected participants were able to try this out by having their Samsung or Huawei phone pre-loaded with Sandpay gift card and Shanghai Pudong Development Bank gift card in China-Mobile’s Wallet. Such gift card allows users to pay for services and merchandises such as catering, vendor machines, or at the nearby Kerry Parkside shopping mall.
As a software developer, we do hope that next year’s MAE will have more exhibits on latest development on mobile apps, platforms, and development tools. See you there next year !
